Greenwich Village's Late-Night Ale House Since Forever

Cold beers, great bartenders, and a MacDougal Street address that puts you at the center of NYC nightlife.

About Us

Some bars in New York City are destinations. MacDougal Street Ale House is a habit. Regulars have been walking through that door since the early 2000s, and the place still delivers the same thing every time: a cold drink, a bartender who knows what they're doing, and the unmistakable energy of Greenwich Village humming right outside the windows.

The crowd here is as mixed as the neighborhood itself. On any given afternoon you might catch a World Cup match on the screens with $5 beers in hand, or settle in for a quiet pint before the Friday-night foot traffic on MacDougal St picks up. The bar opens at noon and keeps pouring until 4 AM every single day of the week, which means this place fits your schedule whether you're a lunch-break regular, a late-night wanderer, or somewhere in between.

There's no gimmick here, no themed cocktail menu designed for Instagram. What you get is a classic New York ale house that has earned its place on one of the most storied blocks in Manhattan, one honest pour at a time.

What We Offer

Happy hour is the headline act, with $5 beers that make the midday and early-evening hours genuinely worth planning around. The draft selection covers the bases you'd expect from a no-nonsense ale house, and the bar staff moves fast even when the room is packed.

Beyond the beer, MacDougal Street Ale House is the kind of spot that works for whatever you need it to be: a quick solo drink before dinner, a group stop on a bar crawl through the Village, or a sports-watching anchor for a big game. Open daily from noon to 4 AM, there's almost no window of time when this place isn't an option.

The location at 122 MacDougal St puts you steps from Washington Square Park, NYU, and some of the best late-night food in the city, so the evening can go wherever you want it to after last call.

Why Choose Us

"This is a go to bar for me anytime I am in NYC. I have been stopping in here since 2001, and it always feels familiar. The bartenders are consistently great, and the surrounding area adds to the experience. Being right across the street from the Comedy Cellar, you get to hear plenty of excited conversations from people heading to or coming from a show, which is always fun. The beer menu has been stronger in the past, and a few options were unavailable this time, but that probably means they are doing something right. I went with a Dogfish 60 Minute IPA, which is a reliable favorite for me both here and back home. The bartender was very friendly and spent a few minutes chatting before a large group came in. She handled the group smoothly, and I gave up my seat so they could sit together, then finished my beer and headed out. There is a $15 credit card minimum, so I ended up ordering a second round, which I did not mind at all. I make a point to stop here every time I am in NYC. I have a lot of great memories of this place, especially from my days working in the Flatiron district with old work buddies."

"If I could give 0 stars I genuinely would. Absolutely terrible bar. Went with some friends, wanted just one drink as need to be up early tomorrow and I don't drink much. Bartender happily poured the drink and took my card and only then told me there was a $15 minimum and refuses to give my card back. This is annoying but not a big deal, I can buy for friends. On top of that, the staff were slow and rude. The toilets were dirty and the menu lacking in variety as well as overpriced."

"Nice bar in NYC with an amazing happy hour. Was able to swing by and enjoy a World Cup game and drink $5 beers. If you’re in the area, swing by, have a couple of cold ones and then enjoy the city. Will definitely stop by in the future."

"Their bouncer has his head twisted on wrong; the guy working at 7:47 PM on Wednesday, June 10. He denied us entry because he didn’t think that our real IDs were fake. Take your money elsewhere, worst bouncer ever."

"Came here on Halloween and ordered 6 shots ($11/each) and was not even given an option to tip after paying. Bartender left himself a generous $15 tip which I did not agree to. Very annoying and will be disputing. Update: No one has returned my calls and the "Contact us" form on your website does not allow me to submit anything."
